I took advantage of the mild SoCal weather this past weekend to visit one of my favorite local spots – Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park. I first discovered this otherworldly location while working on a movie set years ago.

Less than an hour north of Los Angeles, this unique landscape comprised of tilted sandstone rock formations is famous for its many appearances in film and television. The prominent rock has even been nicknamed Kirk Rock for its usage in the Star Trek franchise.

Vasquez is named after notorious California bandit, Tiburcio Vasquez, who evaded law-enforcement by hiding in this area in the mid 1800's.

The park is open from sunrise to sunset. You can even drive up and park right next to the famous rock formation. The trailhead parking lot is open from 8am-7pm everyday and there are no entrance or parking fees. A quick climb up the face of the giant tilted rock can be completed easily in under 30 minutes or you can take one of the many trails and adventure to your hearts content.

Make sure to bring plenty of water because the only water fountain close by is located inside the visitor center, which is only open Tues-Sun 8am-4pm. The trailhead is located at 10700 West Escondido Canyon Road, Agua Dulce, CA 91350. Have a great adventure!

Vasquez Rocks has been used in over 100 films/T.V. shows.... Where have you seen these rocks?
