Seven Magic Mountains - Las Vegas
Today we’re in Nevada and heading just off the Las Vegas Strip to experience a larger than life and one-of-a-kind art installation. Join me in the Mojave Desert at Seven Magic Mountains.
The Artist
Acclaimed Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone has been creating fantastic sculptures for over two decades, including pieces like his well-known 2013 “Human Nature” exhibit at Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. His vision for Seven Magic Mountains was a mix of Land Art and Pop Art, which would evoke a unique emotional experience that all could enjoy. It is indeed a beautiful experience as you walk up-close to these vibrant boulders standing tall against the endless Nevada desert backdrop.
The Sculptures
Seven Magic Mountains is made of 33 individual rocks, each weighing up to 55,000 lbs. The giant rocks are stacked into 7 brightly colored rock totems (each standing up to 35ft tall). Every piece had to be individually cored, painted, and stacked. From inception to execution, this massive art installation took five years to complete, and was produced by The Nevada Museum of Art and The Art Production Fund.
Know Before You Go
• This exhibit is open year-round and is completely free to visit.
• Dogs are welcome, as long as they are kept on leash and picked up after.
• Average Summer daytime temperatures here are 104°F, so consider visiting in the Winter or Spring (and bring plenty of water).
• There is ample parking in the dirt parking lot, which is just a short 2 minute walk on an unpaved path to the sculptures.
• It’s important to stay on the designated path because rattlesnakes are often found around the brush here.
• The exhibit just underwent a full painting restoration in Dec. 2020, so now is a wonderful time to visit and enjoy the bright day glow rainbow colors.
• The sculpture is located just off I-15 less than 20 minutes from the Las Vegas Strip.
• This exhibit is currently scheduled to run through December 2021.
