Skating Away with Cirque

What if ice were a mirror that revealed a hidden facet of ourselves? This is the question Crystal, A Break Through Ice Experience by Cirque du Soleil asks in their 42nd original show. First introduced to the public in October 2017, Crystal made its way to San Diego last week and opened in San Jose, CA yesterday (March 28th) for an Easter weekend run.

I feel the need to start by saying everything I write here today will be completely and totally biased 😊...because I have a longstanding love affair with both figure skating and Cirque du Soliel. So for me Crystal was watching a beautiful dream come to life right before my eyes!

The mood on the stage (or rather the ice) was set beautifully with the pre-show music and entertainment, which included audience participation in snow ball fights! The show opened with beautiful figure skating and harness work.

I loved just about everything in this show. I just can't find a downfall...(except perhaps that "classic Cirque du Soliel way" of having so many things going on at once, I know I'm missing something and MUST get tickets to come back again to make sure I haven't missed anything...I see what you're doing there Cirque du Soleil...well played!) lol 😂

The performers were consummate professionals who looked like they really loved what they were doing. There absolutely was something for everyone: stunt skaters, juggling, multiple trapeze acts (one swinging trapeze with skates!), incredible pole work...and a straps act that nearly brought me to tears, it was so brilliantly choreographed and executed. This is just a little of what you'll see.

A beautiful melding of contemporary hits with original music, amazing costumes and set design, along with performers that made me want to do things I'd never even dreamed of...the entire cast and creative team behind this show deserves a huge round of applause. And they certainly received it along with a standing ovation from the entire audience when I saw the show this past weekend.

I really hope Crystal will make its way to Los Angeles at some point...but for now, my NorCal friends, it's up by you so go see it while you can! 😉

What's your favorite cirque act?
